Speaking of Millenials . . .

While spending time on my social media, this video popped up so, thinking back to our conversations about Millenials, I decided to watch it. Simon Sinek breaks down why this generation is the way they are (he doesn't blame the kids!) and what companies will need to do in order to help this generation to be successful. What can we as educators learn from this and start to implement in our classrooms to help our students BEFORE they get into "the real world?"

  2. I’ve shown this in my classroom the past few years and the part that always stands out to my students and I, is the idea that social media and gaming etc, causes the brain to release dopamine...the same chemical released when we smoke and drink. There are age limits put on smoking and drinking and gambling, but do we have age restrictions placed on technology and kids??? Giving kids unfettered access to technology is like opening the liquor cabinet and saying, “Have at it kids!” I’m unsure what to do with this every time I see it. The students in my classrooms agree with the addictive nature of what he addresses in a portion of his video. Craziness.

  3. I love this video! I agree with his perspective of avoiding blaming the students. They never had a choice of whether or not they would use technology, but they were just thrown into it without a guide to help them navigate it. So often I think about how I can do a better job of being their guide to using technology in ways that make a difference in the world instead of just constantly consuming information. Thanks for reminding me of this.

  4. I've watched this video more times than I can count. Much like you I keep coming back to what can we take away as educators to help this generation. One thing that I keep thinking about is they are very much a "ME" generation in that they have been raised to believe they don't have to do anything they don't want to do. So in schools we have to find ways to tie our content and outcomes to show how they have an affect on them personally. If we don't make it intrinsically motivating for them to learn...they won't because they have been raised to believe they don't have to. Teaching a ME generation is about making it personal to them.
